If anyone here knows who I am then they know that Daniel Johnston's music has been a big inspiration for me. This album is no exception. This is the latest from Daniel. Obviously not as good as his first few albums but for me this is my favorite new Daniel Johnston album. It's so well produced and the instrumentation in the background is so well done. Listen to "mind movies" and "I had lost my mind", they're my favorite on this album. A very well written album and another highly recommended album from me.

This is a pop-punk band from San Fransisco. Really really well written songs, catchy as hell. The lead singer has gone through absolute hell, wikipedia for full story. I'd compare this to Daniel Johnston (in his younger years) mixed partly with the velvet underground (you'll hear it, I promise). I highly recommend this, I'm also highly aware of all the hype this album is getting but in the last week it's seemed to live up to the hype for me.

Just recently got into this guy again. John Zorn is a saxophonist from new york who's been around for quite a while. This album was released in '89. If you are new to jazz or new to free jazz I highly recommend this album. Some songs are smooth and more 'traditional' to what you think jazz will be and others remind me of music from the old school batman series... only on acid. So I've been whoring this band out for a while now and I figured this is a faceblog worthy band. Mercury Rev (from new york, in case you wanted to know) released this fabulous album in 1998. Basically it's pop music that's incredibly sophisticated and is incredibly ahead of its time. I also enjoy the use of the theremin since I'm a theremin player myself. You'll like this if you're into neat instrumentation and amazing melodies. The first track "holes" is a 10/10 for me and I've been listening to it non stop now.

Hello again facebloggers, so I'm currently about 90% through this album and everything is going fantastic so far. If you've ever heard of the Japanese noise rock band "boredoms", OOIOO would be their side project. Once again, very hard to describe their sound. Picture jungle beats with guitar/bass loops with screaching overtones drowned out by the strangest japanese vocals (almost chanting) you've ever heard. I have a real soft spot for japanese music and this is exactly why. If you're a fan of anything experimental or you're just looking for something to smile at tonight then I would for sure give this album a listen. The 15 minute epic trac "sai" pretty much sums up the album.

Now, we all love The Unicorns (If you don't, i'm not sure whats wrong with you). Unfortunately for us, The Unicorn's career was tragically short, leaving us with only one full-length and an ep. After playing these releases to death, i frantically searched the internet for more material from the group. What i found were demo recordings of varying quality, and, this gem: a collection of songs titled "All Make Parts & Collission". Alden Penner, one half of The Unicorns creative core (a.k.a Alden Ginger, or the one thats not in Islands), recorded some lo-fi demo tracks of his own before work on The Unicorns record had began. While this "album" is not 'Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?" it does have the same charm that The Unicorns had. Highlights include "Stop Saying This That Aren't True", "Refinance Your Mortgage", and the instrumental accurately titled, "Instrumental". Also included are two other fantastic tracks by Alden, one titled "The Ghost of Creaky Crater", a one-off single recorded shortly after The Unicorns dissolved, and "Tha Wind", a demo recording from Alden's newest project, "Clues". Their debut album is out now, if you can find it, get it to me. please.

So quite often I am asked "Hey Brandon, I'm trying to get into the harsh noise genre but I don't know where to start, where do i start?"..... ok I'm not asked that ever but if I ever was I would sit them down and make them listen to this album. This is what noise music is all about. It's chaotic and beautiful. Everything you want in an album and everything you don't want. This is why japan is so great. So I suggest you skip the opening track and give "1930" a listen

A duo from providence rhode island, Lightning Bolt redefines the term "drum and bass". The sound is difficult to explain. It's mostly instrumental with some screaming, a lot of effects and a lot of messed up moments. This album is catchy and insane and is totally something you need to hear. Perfect driving music in my opinion. Check out the song "saint Jacques"

very very good band from portland. The sound is very difficult to explain but a lot of it reminds me of deerhunter/frog eyes/xiu xiu. Lyrics are all over the place and pretty out there but this has a certain charm to it. It's like listening to a car accident. A few instrumental interludes in between some songs breaks up the chaos. Overall a fantastic album, one of my favorites of '09

I came across this band today as i was perusing french-indie videos on youtube, and i think they are great. They are a Finnish/French duo Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy, who live in Paris. They are a very unique and inventive band which have an interesting assortment of influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Peaches to Bjork to Pj Harvey, which one may think is definitly kick-ass. They often remind me of The Knife or CSS especially in Stay(just a bit longer) and Queen Dot Kong. Their album is a great mix of different sounds and styles which makes sense because their album is "a mouthful".

Abigail Washburn & The Sparrow Quartet - Self-Titled

A couple of months ago I stumbled onto Abigail Washburn by looking up Bela Fleck videos on Youtube. She's an American banjo player and singer but much of her music has Chinese influence and that can really be heard on the Mandarin-language songs and in the melodies and harmonies of songs like "Great Big Wall in China." The quartet is made up of Abigail on vocals and banjo, Bela Fleck on banjo, Casey Driessen on violin, and Ben Sollee on cello. The music itself is really intricate with plenty of interesting harmonies and melodies, wandering time signatures, and so on and yet it still manages to be catchy. My favourite's "A Fuller Wine." I found it harder to get into the songs she sings in Mandarin but the instrumentals are extremely breath-taking, particularly the "Overture" that opens the album. Happy listening!

When I first heard this album I was completely blown away. Quite possibly the best release of 2005. Sounds a lot like Iron and Wine gone experimental. I highly suggest you listen to italy, a very laid back, song that just screams summer. You will love at least one thing from this album.
